About Hemkund Sahib

Guru Gobind Singh Ji the Tenth Master in one of his great holy compositions entitled “Bachittar Natak” while giving a hint or pointing out this good site Hemkund Sahib or Hemkunt Sahib:

Ab mae apni katha bakhano.
(Now I narrate my own tale)
Hemkunt parbat hae jahan. Sapat sring sobhit hae tahan.
(Hemkunt Mountain is auspiciously situated among “Sapat Sring”, a mountain-chain of the Himalayas
Tah hum adhik tappasia saadhi.
(At that site I meditated heavily on God in the previous birth)
Tin prabh jab aais muhe dia. Tab ham janam kalloo meh lia.
(When the Almighty allowed me then I took birth in the dark age)
On the basis of the aforesaid holy composition uttered by Guru Sahib and with the Sikh Sangat’s assistance some Gursikhs (the true Sikhs) Sant Sohan Singh ji Tihri wale, Hawaldar Modan Singh ji, Bhai Vir Singh ji etc. started the research work of this holy place Hemkund Sahib. In Samvat Nanakshahi 465-66 (1933-34 A.D.) they on the dint of the Sikh Sangat’s assistance and the Guru’s kind grace were successful in reaching this holy place, Hemkund Sahib or Hemkunt Sahib. Roundabout Samvat Nanakshahi 468 (1936 A.D.) the Sikh Sangat got the Gurdwara Sahib constructed at Hemkund Sahib. The inauguration of the installation of Guru Granth Sahib ji was manifested in Samvat Nanakshahi 469 (August-Sep., 1937 A.D.)
Surrounded by the snow-ladden for about four to five months and sky-touching mountainous peaks this holy place Hemkund Sahib is situated approximately at the height of 15,000 feet from the sea level. On the three sides there are the seven peaks of the Sapatsring Mountain of the Hamkunt Mountain Chain (1. Rudar Himalaya 2. Bishanpuri 3. Udgari Kanth 4. Sarga Rohan 5. Brahampuri 6. Mer 7. Sumer) and on the fourth side Nilkanth Mountain is situated. The circumambulation of the holy tank is about 1¼ or 1½ kms. The water of the tank is clean like glass.

Yamunotri Temple: Situated at an elevation of 3030m in the holy town of Yamunotri, Yamunotri Temple is highly visited by devotees from different parts of the world. It was erected in the 19th century and has been annihilated owing to natural calamities twice. The temple is devoted to Yamuna River and the idol installed in it is decorated with garlands.

Surya Kund: It is the place where one can boil rice and potatoes and eat them as a Prasad. The water is so warm with a temperature of 1900 F. This hot water spring is called as Surya Kund that is situated nearby Yamunotri temple.

Janki Chatti: Among the most sought after tourist attraction in Yamunotri, Janki Chatti is positioned just 3 km away. It includes the last village in the area and the devotees are rendered with modest facilities over here. One must take a dip in the hot water springs of Janki Chatti which is a main appeal in Yamunotri itinerary and it is quite mystifying that in such pleasant surroundings how the springs remain hot.

By Air: Jolly grant airport in Dehradun would be the closest airport to make it to Yamunotri, about 227km away. Delhi international Airport is located at a distance of 495km from the holy city of Yamunotri.

By Rail: The nearest railheads to make it to Yamunotri are nestled in Dehradun and Rishikesh/Haridwar, which are 175km and 200km away. Both the stations are well connected to the main cities of India. Moreover, one can hire a taxi from these stations to reach Yamunotri.

By Road: One has to park his/her vehicle at Hanuman Chatti as no road goes from this point. To reach Yamunotri, folks have to get on a trek of 14km from there. Bus services are also available from the cities like Delhi, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Mussoorie etc.

History of the pious destination Gangotri can be traced from the ancient Hindu mythologies. According to it, King Sagar's grandson Anshuman remained unsuccessful to bring Ganga on earth and same was with his son Dilip. However, King Anshuman's grandson Bhagirath was very resolute for this task and meditated at Gangotri. After numerous years of meditation, Ganga came down from the paradise but remained in suspense in the coils of Lord Shiva's hair. Determined to bring Ganga, King Bhagirath started meditation in order to win Lord Shiva. Being pleased with it, Lord Shiva released the Ganga as three streams. One of these streams came on the earth in the form of Bhagirathi. The stream of River Ganga ashes embraced the ashes of 60,000 sons of King Sagar and they all rose to their eternal rest. The reef on which it is deemed that the King Bhagirath meditated is dubbed as 'Bhagirath Shila' Perched close to the shrine of Ganga.

Gangotri Temple: One of the prominent shrines in Gangotri, Gangotri temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is positioned near the sacred stone known as Bhagirath Shila, where it is said that the king Bhagirath paid his homage to Lord Shiva. The height of the shrine is about 20 feet and white granite has been used to build it. It was erected by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha Commander in the early 18th century and later it was reconstructed in the 20th century by the Maharaja of Jaipur. The temple is nestled amid the beautiful surroundings of deoder and pine trees. The lush-green environment and the chants of 'Mantras and Slokas' provide a very peaceful feeling and transport you to another world.

Kedar Tal: A transparent lake nestled at an altitude 15,600ft in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Kedar Tal is a wonderful creation of god and is the idyllic place for a long trek of 17km. The trek starts from Gangotri and leads you through a variety of wonders that will make you rapt and spellbound. Vishwanath Temple: Within a walking distance from bus stand in Uttarkashi, Vishwanath Temple is one of the most legendary temples of this region. The temple is addressed to Lord Shiva and folks from all across the globe pay a visit to this very old temple.

Bhaironghati: It is a temple of Bhairon that is just 10km away from the Gangotri. It is amongst the most popular tourist attractions in Gangotri, because it is believed that the Lord Shiva appointed Bhairon to protect the picturesque region.

Submerged Shivling: It is essentially a natural rock Shivling that according to the legends, where the Lord Shiva sat to hold the Ganga in his hair locks.

Gangnani: It is popular for its enchanting thermal springs and the mesmerizing view of the snow-clad Himalayas. During the months of winter, it remains crowded with locals and tourists who come here to have a glimpse of beautiful Mother Nature from wide and far.

Gomukh: It is an awe-inspiring place from where the divine river Ganga originates. The devotees are fascinated by the tranquil environment that makes it a most sought after place to pay a visit while on a trip to Gangotri.

By Air: The nearest airport to Gangotri is Jolly Grant Dehradun. It is around 24 kms from Dehradun and 226 km from Gangotri. The visitors can hire the private cars, taxis or take the road transport buses from the airport to reach Gangotri through Rishikesh.
